What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of more focused awareness that we experience many times during the course of a day. Some people compare hypnosis to daydreaming or being absorbed in a really good book - the difference is that it is guided and directed.

The suggestions given in this heightened state of awareness can change the belief systems in our subconscious mind without being rejected by our our conscious mind - and long lasting change can be achieved. A person in hypnosis is completely in control and fully aware of the surroundings.



What can hypnotherapy treat?

Hypnotherapy can treat a variety of problems very successfully, some of the most common ones are anxiety, habit control, giving up smoking, changing your relationship with food and your body, phobias, depression, stress management, fear of flying, fear of public speaking, help to overcome grief, finding motivation, self esteem and self acceptance issues and releasing emotional trauma.

It usually only takes a couple of sessions for my clients to notice the first shift and changes. My approach involves the client's active participation and willingness to change - my clients leave the sessions equipped with practical tools to interrupt their learned behaviours and deal with their everyday experiences.


How does it work?

Hypnotherapy challenges our subconscious beliefs and can help us find new ways to solve a variety of different issues. Often we already know what is best for us but we just cannot seem to change unhelpful patterns or habits no matter how hard we try.

One reason for that is that long lasting changes can very often only be made in our subconscious mind where our deep belief systems and habits have been formed from early childhood onwards.

What to expect?

A typical hypnotherapy session lasts one hour and consists of a counselling talk and exploration of the presenting issue and a hypnotic experience. Hypnosis is NOT mind control, it’s NOT being asleep or unconscious while a hypnotherapist “changes your brain”. It’s an active process and the subjective experience of it varies from person to person. Hypnosis is a state of heightened suggestibility and perspective taking. Will it work for me? The honest answer is “I don’t know” but most people can at least achieve a light trance state where powerful change can happen.

As with any other therapy, rapport with your therapist is important to achieve good results and I might not be the right fit for you and your needs.
