Learn to manage your IBS symptoms with our evidence based gut-directed hypnotherapy program. Research suggests that gut directed hypnotherapy can significantly reduce IBS symptoms and improve quality of life.
IBS is a Disorder of Gut and Brain Interaction (DGBI)
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specialised form of clinical hypnotherapy that helps retrain the communication between your brain and gut, offering relief for disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) like IBS. Through guided relaxation and focussed suggestions, this evidence-based treatment can reduce symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a therapeutic intervention specifically designed to calm gut hypersensitivity and normalise digestive function.
If you've been told your symptoms are "just stress" or "all in your head," it's worth knowing that's not the full picture. Disorders of gut-brain interaction like IBS are real, physiological conditions involving genuine nervous-system sensitivity — not something imagined or exaggerated. Gut-directed hypnotherapy works with this system directly, helping calm that heightened reactivity.
Research by Monash University shows it can provide lasting symptom improvement for many people - often achieving better results than the low FODMAP diet.
What to expect?
The initial appointment is a comprehensive 1.5-hour session where we'll explore your symptoms and medical history, discuss the gut-brain connection, and the impact stress and/or trauma have on IBS. The session concludes with a 20-25 minute hypnotic experience.
Following this, we'll meet weekly for 60-minute sessions over the remainder of the six-week program.
Each session focuses on a specific theme — such as stress reduction, overcoming food avoidance, calming the nervous system, or establishing healthy boundaries. These themes are also woven into the hypnosis portion of each session, where your mind is most receptive to positive suggestions and your focused, calm attention can help restore balance to your digestive system.
Home Practice
Between sessions, you'll have tasks to complete at home. The most important is listening to a daily 20-minute hypnosis recording throughout the program. Additional tasks might include trying a previously avoided food or tracking your thoughts. You'll receive detailed instructions via email after each appointment.
The hypnosis recordings are yours to keep and can be valuable tools during flare-ups or whenever you need support in the future.
My Background
I also work as a gut-directed hypnotherapist in the public hospital system, where I stay current with the latest research and medical advancements in IBS treatment. I'm also a registered Nerva (a gut-directed hypnotherapy app) practitioner, delivering this same evidence-based protocol in my one-on-one, individualised sessions. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss a payment plan.
A few common questions
How is this different to the low FODMAP diet?
They work differently — FODMAP changes what you eat, gut-directed hypnotherapy works on how your gut and brain communicate. Research suggests it can achieve results that last as long, sometimes longer, without the ongoing dietary restriction.
I've already tried diet changes and medication, will this still help?
Often, yes. Gut-directed hypnotherapy addresses the gut-brain communication itself, so it can help even when other approaches haven't fully resolved symptoms.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No referral is required, though it's a good idea to have any digestive symptoms checked by a doctor first to rule out other causes.
